The short-term rental (STR) market in Europe has surged over the past two decades, driven by digital booking platforms and the broader digitalisation of tourism. While this boom has simplified access to accommodation and boosted tourism, it has also led to significant challenges, including the displacement of local residents, unchecked real estate development, and the rise of unregulated economic activity. This report examines the STR market at both national and capital city levels, highlighting the environmental, social, and governance issues it creates. With many European cities now considering or implementing restrictions, the report emphasizes the urgent need for effective regulation to ensure the sustainability and balance of the STR sector.
